Up grade. I had too many programs that I didn't want to have to install again.
Turned it on this afternoon & didn't have any desktop icons. Is there some secret there? Hope I don't have to open the libraries to find what I want all the time. Haven't had a chance to look into it yet.

Yep. That's checked. I haven't taken the time to look at it yet, but it might be when changing themes, the icons stick with the desktop theme they were originally on. Didn't have that prob with Vista or XP but it might be different with W7.

I'll play with it when I feel up to it.

You might try clicking it off and then back on.

Have you let Microsoft install all the updates?

I already unchecked & rechecked it several times. All updates are current. I'll try later on 2night again after the movie's over. It's a sci fi 8 hours long.

Not me. I'm a sci fi, horror film fan. This one is "V" an old mini series being shown back to back & it's 10 not 8 hours. Be over at 11pm & then Carrie 2 starts.

The new shortcuts I put on the desktop stay from theme to theme. Have no idea why I lost the original icons. They were all there after I installed W7.

I'll just consider it as a glitch for some reason. The new ones are still here after boot up today. Appears they all were moved to the desktop folder in the library. I'll have to keep track as I keep a few executable files on the DT. Must be one of those things where they advertised things were only 2 or 3 clicks away (instead of my single click files on the desktop). Oh welllll.

Are you talking about the one which comes with Windows Live Mail or the one you can log into with a Windows Live account?

Vista had a seperate calendar but W7 has the calendar included with Live Mail. I have no use for that one as I can't think of any good reason to have to sign in or log in to look at a calendar.
I may find myself downloading a different calendar & email client as well. Basically after using it for several months, I think Live Mail sucks. Worst thing IMO that Billy ever did.

I can do it in 2 clicks as well Tech. I just don't like signing into live mail to access it. What's more, doesn't appear live mail will check mail every so often without staying logged in to uSoft site and I don't like auto login.
With OE it would stay closed and still check my email accounts only making a sound when it actually downloaded something. I think I'm finally understanding what the European Union has been shouting about as far as uSoft bundling their apps..

You don't have to log onto Windows Live to receive your mail. All that does is synchronize the contacts, etc. What I see is that Windows Live Mail works just like OE, it just looks a bit different. I have mine set to check my mail every 1 min.

I used to check every 3 minutes or so but only check every 15 now unless I waiting for something. I haven't found the setting that checks if the program is closed. At least the test programs I've sent from my online clients or websites aren't received without opening Win Live.
Where's the checkbox I'm missing.

Found a calendar from Mozilla that works just fine, single click to open it & same features as the old Vista one.

I understand that in Windows 7, Outlook (any version) won't work. If this is true, is there a decent substitute for the program? Could I transfer all my current Outlook info to whatever replacement program Windows 7 is using?

I am heavily invested in Outlook 2003, using it for all of its functions (mail, calendar, addresses, reminders, etc.), I would sure hate to start over from scratch!

I think you will find that nothing in Microsoft Office 2003 including Outlook 2003 will work in Windows 7. But all Microsoft Office 2007 will work. If you upgrade to Outlook 2007 you should be in good shape.

Note: If you are using XP you will have to do a clean install. That means everything on the disk drive will be lost forever. Be sure to make a backup of your Outlook (and all other important) files before you start the install. You can then restore them after you install Microsoft 7 and Outlook 2007.

Windows mail is still on my machine after W7 install but can't be opened. Software restriction policy is stopping it. Think I may just have to shell out the $40 for Mailwasher Pro again. Looking at Eudora & Thunderbird for a mail client. Have to check open forge for a client as well.
W7 may be the cats meow but I'm sure not purring. At least not yet.

Half of my desktop items/icons disappeared on bootup again today. This is the 3d time. Getting frustrating. I think I'll keep Vista on my laptop.
